Thereupon the unnamedinfantry regiment became the Third IllinoisField Artillery. It was brought to strengthalmost immediately by the addition of threetroops from the old First Illinois Gordon Strong was placed at thehead of the new regiment and Lieutenant Colonel Horatio B. Hackett wasappointed second in command. It would be difficult to imagine a less military organization than thatwhich was mobilized at Springfield and inducted into the federal service earlyin August.
