Charles XII of Sweden (1682-1718) was faced in 1699 by a Russo-Polish-Danish alliance that precipitated the Northern War (1700-1721). A very brilliant but foolhardy strategist, he quickly defeated Denmark. He then forced Peter the Great to retreat and took over Poland. His Russian campaign of 1708-09 ended in defeat. In 1713, reduced to only a few men, he defended his house against the Turkish army. He was taken prisoner to Adrianople. He left the following year and in 1716 invaded Norway, but was killed by a stray bullet. His failures cost Sweden its rank as a major power.
