The origin of this castle, which is now in a very ruinouscondition, is unknown. That the castle is very ancient, iscertain from many circumstances, but the ig:norance ofits origin is by no means a satisfactory proof of itsantiquity. It is situated on a hill to the westward of thetown of Hastings. Its original figure seems to have beenan oblique spherical triangle, with the points rounded base of the triangle, or south side, is formed by a per-pendicular cliif, 400 feet in length, and fronts the sea; theeast side is a plain wall, without tower or other defence,300 feet long, and the wall which forms the remaining sideof the triangle, is about 400 feet long.
