Dr. Story was at Harewood in 1790 ; he made mention ofthis castle, not doubting that it had been a place of great note, audpointed out many places which had been adjoining, but now in ruinsand buried in the grass. The principal entrance to the castle was beneath asquare turret on the east side. Over the portcullisedgateway, lofty enough to admit a knight on horseback, may still be seen the predestinarian motto of the founderof the castle, vat sal be sal, flanked on the right bythe Aldeburgh arms of the rampant lion charged with afleur de lys on the shoulder, and on the left by the armsof Edward Baliol, King of Scotland,—an orle. Theie hasbeen much speculation as to the relations between Balioland the Aldeburghs, the intimate character of which is soabundantly attested. Not only do his arms appear thusprominently displayed over the main entrance to thecastle, but they were to be seen on three shields withinits walls, and even on the tapestry in its chambers. The. HA RE WOOD MANOR, CASTLE & CHURCH. 145 widow of the second Lord Aldeburgh mentions in her will(fts we shall see later) one red tapestry with crimsonborder, with the arms of Baliol and Aldeburgh ; and shealso bequeaths one best bassinett with head, also onecuirass which was Ed. Baliols ; all of which is eloquentevidence of the prized friendship which must have existedbetween the Scottish King and the family of Aldeburgh. Indeed there is abundant evidence in the Records ofthis intimacy. William de Aldeburgh, the first, was anesquire of the body and confidential friend of Baliol. Heis described by Edward III. on several occasions as Valettus of our beloved and faithful cousin, EdwardBaliol, King of Scotland, (Rot. Scot. 24 Ed. III., )—Valettus being equivalent to what afterwardswas designated ^,entleman of the privy chamber or esquire of the body
