THE STORY The Abbe Prevost romance has been treated operatically by several composers, thefirst being Halevy, who wrote a ballet on the subject in 1830. Other settings followed—byBalfe, 1836; Auber in 1856 and Massenet in 1884. Puccinis version consists of four detached scenes selected from the novel, and the hearershould possess some knowledge of the story to fully understand the action of the opera. The first act shows the courtyard of an inn at brother, Lescaut, a dissolute soldier, is escorting hispretty little sister to the convent where she is to complete hereducation.
