After being promoted to lieutenant inDecember, 1852, he spent some time on sea duty invarious squadrons, being present at the capture ofthe Barrier forts, Canton river, in 1856, and lateron shore duty at the U. S. observatory in Wash-ington. During the civil war he was attached tothe Cumberland, and was present at the engage-ment off Hatteras Inlet. He became com-mander in July, 1802, and from 1804 till 1800served in the Pacific squadron, commanding theLancaster and Powhatan. In 1808 he waspromoted captain, and, after being engaged innavigation duty in Washington navy-yard during1867-70, was given command of the Congress,of the European squadron. DAYENPORT, John, clergyman, b. in Coven-try, England, in 1597; d. in Boston, Mass., 15March, 1670. Plis father had been mayor of the city.
