The Hotel St George (right) was once one of Wellington’s top hotels. It is an Art Deco building occupying an historic corner site. It was briefly the country's largest hotel. The hotel was designed by architect William Prouse in 1930. The hotel was widely regarded as the capital city's top hotel, and played host to many events in its Palm Lounge. It played host to The Beatles during their 1964 tour and was the first-choice hotel for visiting dignitaries for many years. It is now St George Accommodation, specialising in affordable accommodation for workers, students and backpackers. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range.
