Much of the furniture had been made expresslyfor the Red Room after designs by Mr. Thorn- c 94: son Willing, and the completed scheme of decora-tion, including the aforesaid corner doors, thegreat tile fireplace, and the encircling shelf setwith mugs of the same blue delft as the tiles, wasfinished and accepted with great satisfaction justas the new building plans called for the sacrificeof the much-admired room in the interest of thenew gallery. When the south wall, with its tworichly curtained windows looking across the roofof the old studio, was removed, the Red Room was a three-sided shell. The improvements were made by the landlordbut the work was planned and directed by Wallace, an architect member, who verygenerously gave his time and his talent to theconstruction, and the first autumn meeting ofthe club was held in the new STAIRWAY, 14 WEST 12TH STREETFrom a charcoal drawing by Charles S. Chapman CHAPTER VI THE LIBRARY It was in the little front room at 49 West Twenty-second Street that the club library had its begin-nings. A number of books seem to have beenpreviously contributed by members, and thewriter of this history had been in some way con-stituted librarian, but the books were not listedor numbered. In November, 1891, without anymore definite date, the following circular wasissued to members: 49 West 22d , 1891. Mr. Dear Sir: Near the close of the last Club season amovement was started to found a library for theClub. It is desired that each member shall con-tribute one or more books.
