Boilers.—The best type of boiler will depend upon the kind ofbuilding to be heated, and also to a considerable extent upon itssize. For dwelling houses, and school buildings and churches ofsmall size, some form of cast-iron boiler is usually employed. These are commonly rated according to the direct radiatingsurface which they will supply. Catalogue ratings, however, should not in general be used, and it is better to compute thenecessary grate surface as described in Chapter Fig. 68. Adjustable Floor Sleeve for Protection of Woodwork. If catalogues are to be relied upon, only about 75 per cent ofthe rating should be taken, and this should include steam mainsand risers as heating surface unless they are thoroughly insulated. For larger building, tubular boilers are generally method of computing the size of these boilers for heatingpurposes has already been given in Chapter V. Boiler Connections.—The connections for cast-iron heatingboilers are simple. If a single boiler is used, valves should beplaced in both the supply and return mains, and a check valveshould also be provided in the latter outside of the gate low pressures are carried, the boiler may be fed under citypressure, through one of the return headers. Both stop andcheck valves should be placed in the feed pipe. Connections pro- 104 HEATING AND VENTILATING PL
