London, UK. 22 October 2016. Rodney Kelly, a sixth-generation descendant of the Gweagal warrior Cooman shot in the leg by Captain Cook and his crew at their first landing in Australia at Botany Bay in 1770 looks at the illustration of his ancestor's shield in aBritish Museum exhibition catalogue. With other indigenous campaigners he is demanding the return of the shield as well as spears held in a Cambridge University museum to a new museum to be opened in Sydney on the 250th anniversary of Cook's visit celebrating the history of the country's original inhabitants, The photograph appears to show more sacred red ochre than the shield, suggesting it has not been proplerly preserved.
