Organization A MHERST COLLEGE was opened September 19, 1821,when forty-seven students were admitted into the fourregular classes. Its charter, received February 21, 1825,confers upon the Corporation the right to perpetuate itself,together with the privileges usually granted to the trusteesof such institutions. It provides that the number of trus-tees shall never be greater than seventeen, seven of whomshall be clergymen and ten laymen, and that the five vacanciesfirst occurring shall thenceforth be filled by the joint ballotsof the Legislature of Massachusetts, in convocation of bothHouses. This provision was maintained for nearly fiftyyears, until the Legislature, by an Act passed, and approvedby the Governor April 28, 1874, conferred the power of fillingthese five vacancies upon the Alumni, by whom it is nowexercised in accordance with rules adopted by the Board ofTrustees in concurrence with the Society of the corporate name of the Institution is The Truste
