He was a member of the Charrington brewery family. and an Evangelical Christian who founded the Tower Hamlets mission and utilised Great Assembly Hall in Mile End Road,London. In addition he purchased Osea Island Essex and established a treatment centre for people with alcohol and opium addictions,
