Human prion precursor protein, molecular model showing secondary structure. The human prion protein (hPrP) is a prion precursor. Prions are abnormal proteins that are the cause of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) such as BSE in cows, scrapie in sheep and CJD in humans. It contains three alpha-helices, and a short anti-parallel beta-sheet. It consists of a single chain with 104 amino acids.
