The gentleman whose name heads this brief notice is oneof the early settlers of Shiawassee, and was born in thecity of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, July 7, father, also named John, was born in the parish ofMathlick. He was a manufacturer of linen and cotton goods,but in the later part of his life, owing to ill health, becamea farmer. He married Miss Jane Frasier, and reared afamily of four children,—two boys and two girls,—Johnbeing the eldest. In 1825 he removed from Peterhead tothe place of his nativity, and leased a farm of Lord Aber-
