Locks can often be seen attached to objects alongside waterways with the keys thrown into the water to symbolise undying love
As a symbol of eternal love couples engrave or write their names on a lock, they then secure it to an object alongside a river and throw the key in the river, so the lock cannot be opened symbolic of their undying true love. Although this appears a recent trend, the tradition is far older than one might think: it originated in Serbia during World War II, when couples from the town of Vrnjacka Banja symbolically sealed their love before the men went off to fight.
