A daring photographer foolishly gets close to an unpredictable northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) resting on a stony beach in the San Benito Islands in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Baja California in Mexico. This young male (bull) is easily recognized by its elongated snout that resembles the trunk of an elephant. When fully grown, bulls of this species can weigh up to 5,500 pounds (2495 kilograms) and reach as much as 16 feet ( meters) in length. In the background is a female elephant seal that typically is smaller in size and lacks the large proboscis of the male.
