Sir,—In the matter of Calling uponhouseholders for orders, I will state franklythat while I adopt the system from force ofcircumstances I am opposed to it. Theroot of the evil, however, is with the whole-sale grocers. Every firm in that line now has from twoto three city travellers. These have to ob-tain trade in some way, and the consequenceis that we have four times the number of re-tail grocers that we would have had we nocity travellers. So much competition therefore exists, thatit seems almost imperative for a retail grocerto send a clerk to a large number of his cus-tomers weekly for orders. It is a great pitythat in Toronto either wholesale or retailgrocers have to send out salesmen, for itmeans an expense offrom 8 to 10 per cent. Itcosts the wholesalers from 3 to 4 per cent, tosell their goods, and the retailers from 5 to 6per cent. That of course does not includebad debts, and I think I am within the m
