View SE of St Levan's well & baptistery above Porth Chapel Cove, St Levan, West Penwith, Cornwall. The signpost (foreground L) indicates several local footpaths and the South West Coast Path which is visible running over Rospletha Cliff and Pedn-Men-an-Mere headland. A healing well especially good for relieving toothache & sore eyes. Those seeking a cure would lie overnight on a massive stone which covers the spring and forms the baptistery floor. The well is connected to the remains of a chapel by a flight of 50 stone steps. Legend of St Levan: visited by one of his sisters (St Breage or St Manaccan), Selevan fed her children with two chad he caught specially for them from off the rocks at Porth Chapel Cove. Three times he caught the same two fish on one hook, but twice rejected them as being too full of bones. The fish were cooked, the hungry children ate hastily and both choked on the bones and died. Local fishermen used to call chad 'chuck-cheeld' (choke child). A few holidaymakers are sunbathing at the base of the cliff.
