Japan: Tokugawa Ieharu (20 June 1737 - 17 September 1786), tenth ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1760-1786). Hanging scroll painting, 18th century. Tokugawa Ieharu, born Takechiyo, was the tenth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate and the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieshige. Mount Asama eruped in Shinano during his reign, the devastation it caused exacerbating the Great Tenmei Famine. Liberalising reforms that would have relaxed Japan's isolationist foreign policy and were led by one of Ieharu's chief counselors, Tanuma Tonomo-no-kami Okitsugu, were halted when Tanuma's son was assassinated.
