Genetically-engineered food. Conceptual image of an apple being injected with syringes filled with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) strands. The image is depicting the concept of genetically-engineered food. The syringe represents the introduction of DNA into the apple's genes. Genetic engineering makes it possible to introduce DNA into an organism that may have originated in an entirely different species. This is impossible to achieve by conventional breeding. The DNA may make the apple resistant to fungal moulds, or enable the fruit to ripen without softening which improves its flavour.
