When the urine contains pus, the local treatmentwill be the same as that presently to be described for cystitis. Cystitis. This, as we have already seen, is a common complicationof enlarged prostate, so that we must always be prepared todeal with it in its earliest stage. When the urine has atendency to become cloudy, and gives off a fishy, offensiveodour, a useful drug to administer is boric acid, which may. Fig. 45- be given in 10-grain doses three times daily. A patient ofmine, himself a medical man, who for years has been de-pendent on his catheter, informed me that he found two orthree large doses of 25 grains each more effectual in bringingthe urine back to its normal condition than repeated smalldoses ; and I have since then frequently verified this ex-perience in practice. If the urine becomes decidedlyalkaline, the boric acid should be combined with thebenzoate of ammonia in 10-grain doses. Urotropin indoses of from 5 to 10 grains three times daily is the mostefficient drug for this condition. This is particularlyeffective when the urine contains pus and mucus. 7—2 ioo GENERAL TREATMENT OF ENLARGED PROSTATE When pus forms, the bladder must be washed out once or daily with disinfectants or astringent lotions.
