CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH RAILWAY IN-JURIES—SHOCK AND ITS TREATMENT—SEP-SIS AND PRIMARY TREATMENT OF THEWOUNDS—TRANSPORTATION. Shock: Its Cause, Degrees, and Diagnosis. A condition which is especially prominent in railwayinjuries is shock. This is defined as being a condition ofdepression of all the vital powers of the system, varyingin degree from a slight syncope to a condition resemblingdeath. Caused by the disturbance to the animal economy,as well as by the mental terror of being injured, it oper-ates as a very important factor in the prognosis of anycase. There are many conditions that may bring on shock,such as mental emotions, injuries, surgical operations,burns, poisons, pain, and hemorrhage. In
