As we had brought provisions for the day we hadno need to share their midday meal, to which wewere invited : a central dish of stew, from which thefamily at the circular table helped themselves withwooden spoons, the meal being washed down bydeep draughts of water from the porous, chatty-likejars kept in the coolest corner. Delightfully. FILLING THEIR CANTAROS [To face page 19 THROUGH WILD EUROPE 19 cool and refreshing this water was, though I muchfear that it came from the sewage-tainted streamwhich flowed past their door, for before leaving Iphotographed the two pretty daughters filling theircantaros from its polluted depths. I must say that the sight gave me sundry mis-givings, for I had refreshed myself more than oncewhile waiting; however, no ill results followed, andperhaps after all the drinking-water had come fromsome purer source, for in Spain they well knowand appreciate the value of good and purewater. We had not forgotten the Vultures, but from timeto time kept a look-out from the doorway. Westarted with fair hopes of success, for while settingthe bait out and arranging the camera we hadnoticed a soaring Griffon which had evidently espiedthe bait.
