Ordinarily inspection locomotives are built by simply applyinga cab or possibly a new boiler and a cab to an old American typelocomotive. On the Reading, however, when it was recentlynecessary to provide three new locomotives of this type it wasdecided to prepare a design especially for this purpose and theresult is a decided improvement in every particular. The spacein the observatinn rmim is larger, the size of the firebox insures. Interior of Observation Room Looking Toward the Rear. sufficient steam making capacity and the locomotive throughoutcan be more perfectly balanced, making it easier riding andcapable of higher speeds. These locomotives were designed in the office of the mechanicalengineer and were built at the Reading shops of this Atlantic type wheel arrangement was selected in order toobtain the very wide and large grate area desired. The boilersliell has been made very small in diameter so that it fits betweenthe wheels and in fact is so located that the center oi the lioiler effort to handle one or two private cars on a good schedule. One of the illustrations shows a cross section of the boilerwhich indicates the efforts that have been made to keep every-thing as low as possible. The firebox is of the Wooten typeand the crown sheet is on a level with the top of the ■\lthough the height may be very small, the size of the grate isnot and an area of 63 sq.
