Fragata Presidente Sarmiento sail steamship naval museum, moored in the muddy waters of Dock 3, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires

The ARA Presidente Sarmiento museum ship, named after Argentina's 7th president, is maintained in its original 1898 appearance. It was originally built, as a sail training ship with auxiliary steam engines for the Argentine Naval Academy, by Laird Brothers, Birkenhead, and launched in 1897. Four 5 inch guns, 2 on each side, are positioned amidships. The rear stack is the funnel exhaust for the two coal-fired boilers driving the steam propulsion. The forward stack is the funnel exhaust for the engines driving electrical generation, other then propulsion. The ship retired in 1938 after 37 annual training courses, including 6 circumnavigations of the world.
