The Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California) is one of the most diverse seas on the planet, and is home to more than 5,000 species of vertebrates and macroinvertebrates. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It hosts a number of endemic species, several migratory species such as the blue whale, humpback whale fin whale and manta ray, and large colonies of sea birds and sea mammals.
