Thousands of adobe bricks create the walls of the fourth Catholic church built at a settlement along the Pecos River. On a ridge cutting across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is Pecos National Historical Park, home to a vast pueblo community. It was here that native peoples chose to reside and Spanish explorers tried to establish an outpost to spread their Catholic religion over the course of hundreds of years. The foundations of the pueblo buildings, ceremonial kivas and the last vestiges of a large church, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de Porciuncula, still exist as reminders of history in the area.
