Pompey Urged to Be Dictator
The ties binding the First Triumvirate in Rome had been frayed with the death of one of them, Crassus, and the death of Julia—the daughter of another, Julius Caesar, and wife of Pompey, the third member. Rome was in turmoil and Caesar amassing more power. The Senators preferred Pompey, and, in this early 1900s illustration, are shown entreating Pompey to assume the dictatorship to quell the turmoil. Pompey refuses to become dictator, but does become the most powerful man in Rome, with Caesar fighting in Gaul beyond Rome's boundaries, thereby setting of the stage for the civil war that follows.
