Liberto served 10 years in the Marine Corps Reserve before being honorably discharged as a sergeant. He was shot and killed in the line of duty, Sept. 20, 2019. “We as officers owe it to America to give back someone who’s better physically, mentally, morally. That’s what we do in the Marine Corps,” said Ansel. “We make Marines; we make them better mentally, physically, and morally, and then they go back into their communities. Vinnie Liberto is just a perfect example of this. His irrational call to serve continued from his Marine Corps service to public service as a Mandeville police officer.”
