Between the feet of the eagle is a water-bucket surmounted by a sort of coronet or crown, intended to representthe principal events narrated in the 4th chapter, which are Christstalking with the woman of Samaria at the well, and his healing theson of a nobleman at Capernaum. The 5th chapter is indicated bya fish above the eagles right wing, which is intended to bring tomind the pool of Bethesda. The principal event related in the 6thchapter, Christ feeding the multitude, is indicated by the two fishesand five small loaves above the eagles left wing. The cross withina circle, above the fishes, is emblematic of the consecrated wafer inthe Lords supper, as celebrated by the church of Eome.*. The above reduced copy of the cut will aflbrd some idea of themanner in which the memory is to be assisted in recollecting the first sixchapters of St. John.
