Mi:a Ring CoppetFlanged Plate Plan of Copper Flanged PlateFig. 25.—Construction of a quenched 78 EA DIO TELEGRA PH V gaps are in series resulting in the use of a large total voltage toform the sparks (see Fig. 26). This form of quenched spark dis-charger is called a NYieu discharger. The surfaces must be verysmooth, parallel, and near together in order that the spark maybe quenched by the cooling action of the metal surfaces. A verysimilar form of quenched spark discharger was invented by VonLepel in which a paper ring is used to separate slightly two water-cooled Hat or conical metal surfaces between which the dischargetakes Fig. 26.—A q^uenched spark discharger made as shown in sectionin Fig. 25. Another form of quenched spark discharger is that due toPeukert, in which a thin film of oil between two rotating metalsurfaces is pierced by the spark. In the Wien form of dischargerwith fixed plates, there is a tendency for the spark to continueto pass at the same points between the surfaces, and thus to eatthem away at certain points and increase the distance betweenthem. This is overcome by making the surfaces rotate. A modification of Peukerts discharger invented by the Author,is a very effective form of quenched spark discharger, and of greatuse in laboratory work. It is constructed as follows:— Two very flat plates, Ai, A2 (see Fig. 27), of hardened steel areprepared, and one of these has a small hole in the centre. These plates are held in a frame which can be immersed ina vessel of paraffin oil. One of the plates is attached to a steelshaft which runs in ball bearings, and can be rotated by an elect
