Here, although eveiwthingwas in a state of perfect preservation, not aliving soul was to be seen; the village, withits neat houses made of raupo, and its court-yards and provision boxes, was entirelydeserted. From the moment the chief waslaid beneath the upright canoe, on whichwere inscribed his name and rank, the wholevillage became strictly tapu, or sacred, andnot a native, on pain of death, was permittedto trespass near the spot. The houses wereall fastened up, and on most of the doorswere inscriptions denoting that the propertyof such an one remained there. An utter silence pervaded the ascertaining that no natives were inthe vicinity of the forbidden spot, I landed,and trod the sacred ground; and my footstepswere probably the first, since the desertionof the village, that had echoed along its pal-isaded passages.
