Mycenaean pottery amphora with a linear B sign, 1250 -1180 BC . Mycenae archaeological site Museum, Greece. Linear B is a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek, the earliest attested form of Greek. Linear B consists of around 87 syllabic signs and over 100 ideographic signs. These ideograms or "signifying" signs symbolize objects or commodities so it is likely that the linear B symbols depicts the contents that the amphora was filled with. The application of Linear B appears to have been confined to administrative contexts.
