Orchid flower (Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana). The small protruding petal at lower centre is the lip (pink with white hairs). The lip is a specialised structure that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in the tropical forests of the Philippines. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
