Transcription: DuValls Bluff[Duvall ?s Bluff] Ark July the 4th 1864 My Dear Cousin It is with great pleasure that I seat myself this pleasant afternoon to adres you with a few in answer to your which came to hand today it found me enjoying myself as best I could and I hope this my find you enjoying yourself finely. the Boys are having a fine time today as it is the 4 of July it is kind of a holiday all duty except nessessary guard is suspended today we had a skirmish with the Rebs a week ago today yesterday at Clarrenden[Clarendon] we killed about 30 and wounded 60. our loss was one killed and 16 wounded only one in our company and his wound was through the left hand I was in it and shot at the Rebs about as fast as my gun would allow me for about 4 hour neerly all of the Reble wounded was wounded through the abdoman it was fun to see the dirty fellows run we took some 10 or 12 prisoners we were after them 4 days but the would not engage any thing but the skirmish line our camp has the prais[praise] of the Gen of being the best on the lines we charged and rove a reble Battery twice not allowing them to fier more than two or three shots. the Boy were pretty well run down when they came home. the Roads was very mudy while we were gone half the way that we followed the Rebs was through a swamp mud knee deep the weather is very warm I have been very sick with the yellow ganders but I am getting better now I will soon be well again I have told you about all the news except that the Rebs that we were after fiered on and took the crew prisoners and sunk the Gun Boat No 26 at Clarenden[Clarendon] the rebles were under Gen Shelby I guess I will close for this time pleas write soon from your Cousin till Death Adieu Henry T Martin Title: Letter signed Henry T.
