History.—In 1534 the Portuguese began to settlein Bombay. They «ere accompanied by theFranciscans, ^ho gradually covered the islandwith churches, monasteries, and communities of converts. When in 1665 the island was cededto the English, the work was continued by thesame order and by secular clergy from Goa. In1720, on political grounds, the Goanese clergy wereexpelled by the Government, and the Vicar of theGreat Mogul (formerly the Vicar of the Deccan) wasinvited to take charge of the CathoUcs. Although. Church op the Holy Name, Bombay this was done with the approval of Rome, theGoanese clergy from time to time tried with theGovernment to recover their position, and in1764 established a, double jurisdiction. At firstthe vicariate extended indefinitely over the northof India; but in 1784 the northern portion wasseparated and given over to the Mission of vicariate then gradually began to be called theVicariate of Bombay. It was under the care of theCarmelite fathers from 1720 to 1854. When theyresigned their charge the vicariate was divided, thenorthern, or Bombay portion, being taken over by theCapuchins, while the southern, or Poona portion,was given to the German Jesuits. A few years laterthe Capuchins also resigned, and hence in 1858 theAvhole of the Bombay-Poona Mission came into thehands of the German Jesuits. Meantime a
