Hindu princess Damayanti, a princess in the Vidarbha Kingdom, is approached by a swan telling her how great the king Nala was.
In this painting by Warwick Goble (1862-1943), a Victorian illustrator of children's books, the Hindu princess Damayanti, a princess in the Vidarbha Kingdom, is approached by a swan (pictured here) telling her how great the king Nala was. Nala was the king of the kingdom of Vidarbha and a sage told him of beautiful Damayanti. As a king, he could not go seek her love and her hand in marriage, but a swan came to him and offered to do his bidding. The gods, however, also wanted Damayanti and they changed themselves to appear like Nala, but Damayanti was not deceived when she went to choose her husband. She chose the Nala who was not perfect, who was blinking.
