Incident at Nelson's funeral, St Paul's Cathedral, 9 January 1805, Seamen tearing his flag apart for souvenirs
Original illustration from British Battles on Land and Sea by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Company circa 1880. Nelson's body was placed in a coffin made from the mast of L'Orient from the Battle of the Nile. The sailors who were supposed to fold his flag into his coffin tore it into fragments as each wanted a piece as a memento.
