Oxford, England - 13 September 2019 Originally known as North Hinksey House, the so-called Cauldwell Castle was erected in 1848 on Folly Bridge Island on the Thames. It was built as for Joseph Caudwell, an eccentric Oxford accountant who may have planned it as a folly to match the name of the bridge. It has a checquered history, and is noted today for its bizarre architecture and number of plaster statues, including, on the rooftop, a figure of Atlas who has unfortunately lost his globe. Beneath here you can see what was originally the front door, now bricked up, with the forecourt in front of it.
