A late 19th Century view of the Palmerston Fort on St Catherine's Island just off Tenby, a walled seaside town in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on the western side of Carmarthen Bay. The town's fortunes rose when a local resident, merchant banker and politician, Sir William Paxton invested heavily in the area. With the growth in saltwater sea-bathing for health purposes, Paxton went on to create a "fashionable bathing establishment suitable for the highest society.
