Santiago de Cuba is the second city of Cuba on the south east coast ,based around a deep water bay. The city was established in 1515 by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar, In 1898 Santiago was the centre of a war of independence against the Spanish and this was here the intervened with Teddy Rooseveldt’s Rough Riders. Santiago played a prime role in the 1950’s in the uprisings against the Baptista government. Fidel Castro chose Santiago for his debut battle in 1953 when he and a small band of supporters attacked the Moncada barracks The Castillo del Morro San Pedro de la Roca fort was built between 1633 and 1639. to deal with pirates and protect the harbour of Santiago
