Thetree is sometimes 25 or 30 ft. in height, usuallywith rigid horizontal branches which form apeculiarly flat top, and short ridged trunk 12-13in. in diameter. The branches and trunk usu-ally bristle with an armament of rigid sharpthorns to a remarkable degree, and on accountof these the sagacious shrike or butcher-bird,which abounds in our northern fields, almostinvariably chooses a tree of this kind in whichto build its nest. Here effectually barricadedagainst cats and children it nests and rears itsyoung in perfect safety, and vipon the thornsit finds places to impale its prey.
