The Spring Beauty is a ephemeral wildflower, meaning it is an early bloomer while light can reach the forest floor before the leaves are in full growth at which time it dies back to its underground parts. It is a very small wildflower, with blooms only 1/2 inch or so in diameter. It can form colonies that blanket the forest floor in large patches. This image was taken at Sosebee Cove off Wolfpen Gap Road in North Georgia. The north facing cove is a treasure trove of wildflowers throughout the spring months.
