Radiolarian. Light micrograph of the radiolarian Amphiloche elongata. This single-celled amoeboid protozoan is found in marine plankton. Amphiloche elongata is the type of radiolarian belonging to the sub-order: Acantharia. These have an intricate and complex internal skeleton composed of spicules of strontium sulphate. Around this, as seen here, is an external layer of vacuolated and buoyant protoplasm, from which radiate numerous pseudo- podia. Food particles are trapped by these pseudopodia as the animal floats in the water column and feeds. Radiolaria are very abundant in the oceans. Magnification: unknown.
