MATTHEW STANLEY UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM PENNSYLVANIA, 149 MATTHEW STANLEY QUAY. Late United States Senator from Pen7isylvania. Held for nian\^ years a leading position in thepolitical affairs of the nation. He was born in thevillage of Dillsburg, York Connty, Penn., Septem-ber 30, 1833, his father being a Presbyterian clergy-man. Yonng Quay early evinced an ardent desirefor a thorough education, and, after passing throughthe various grades of the public schools, he took acourse at Jefferson College, from which institution hewas graduated at the age of seventeen. His familyhaving removed to Pittsburg, he began the stud}^ oflaw in the office of Judge Sterrett, which, however,he intermitted by a visit to the Southw^est, where hespent a year or two in teaching and lecturing. Re-turning home he resumed his law studies, and wasadmitted to the bar in 1854, at the age of twent^^ 1855 he was appointed to the office of Protho-notary of Beaver Count}^, to fill a vacancy, and
