Remains of Coldingham Benedictine priory looking WNW: column base of S transept of C13th priory church with arch between transept & S aisle of its nave. Priory church largely destroyed by Cromwell 1648 but present church uses its surviving, rebuilt & restored choir & sanctuary. The original Coldingham, founded in C7th by St Ebba on Kirk Hill, St Abbs Head, was destroyed by Danes in C9th when St Ebba the Younger & her community were martyred. Priory re-founded here in 1098 & rebuilt 1220. There was a shrine to St Aebbe (Ebba) in the church in Medieval times.
