InMay of that year, a large provisional army was authorized; and Washington vva;appointed commander-in-chief. A small naval armament was raised, and hostilitieswere begun on the ocean. The American schooner Retaliation was captured bythe French frigate Itisiirgente, but the latter was afterwards captured by the Ameri-can frigate Constellation, commanded by Commodore Truxtun.
