The statue of John W. Thomas in Centennial Park. Thomas was a businessman and President of the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition in 1897. He was also the president of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway and instrumental in securing Centennial Park for the city. The memorial was created in 1907 and presented on behalf of the employees of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway. In the background is the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the original in Athens, Greece. The structure was designed by architect William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Centennial Park, not far from downtown, is Nashville's premier green space area.
