When the tie was removedit had disappeared in the wood, and the base of the rail was resting on the outeredges of the tie beyond the plate. This tie had been treated with zinc chloride. The water which gatheredunder the tie plate leached out the salt, and as a result decay started on bothsides of the plate, as the illustration shows. The tie had to be removed, al-though the rest of it was perfectly sound (Figs. 87 and 88).
