Schouten rounding Cape Horn. Map showing the new passage around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, traversed in 1616 by the Dutch explorer Willem Schouten (). Previous explorers had passed through the Strait of Magellan, between the South American mainland and Tierra del Fuego. Schouten passed through the Lemaire Strait to the west of Staten Island on 24 January 1616, and rounded Cape Horn on 29 January 1616. Schouten named the cape for his home town of Hoorn, but the name was later shortened. This map is from a 1619 French edition of Schouten's account of his voyages.
